The School Logo is the blue fish.
This symbolises “Perseverance”.
A Japanese folk tale tells of an artist whose lack of success had brought him to the point of starvation in the middle of a very cold winter. He was in such despair that, as he walked through a park, he began to think about committing suicide.
On reaching a pool, which was covered with ice, the artist noticed the ice break and, for a brief second, he saw the silvery body of a fish through the small gap. While he watched, the fish repeated its action again and again, thrusting its bruised and by now bleeding body, against the cruel ice and breaking it further.
The artist quickly realised what the fish was doing. It was using its body to cut a channel towards a morsel of food, which was frozen, in the ice. Even though its movements grew gradually weaker, the fish kept on until it finally reached, and ate, the food.
The artist believed that what he had seen was a message of hope for the future. The fish had succeeded because it had refused to give up. He would do the same! He returned home and began to paint with renewed vigour and liveliness. When the new paintings were put on display, the public recognised his talent and bought them. From that time, the artist became famous, his paintings sold quickly and his future was assured.
When Friesland opened, this story provided the inspiration for the school logo, which is an encouragement to all our pupils to “keep on persevering” in all aspects of their work.
